I recently applied to About.com to become a contributing writer under their Southeast Asia Travel section. About.com pays a fix rate to their guides and contributing writers, and I think it qualifies it as being a separate category in my post, “Leveling Up,” which details my hierarchy of freelance writing positions. I was trying to find out if there were any other positions like this by other companies, when I came across a great blog post at AimforAwesome. The writer of the blog used to be a Guide for the Thailand section, and has a really detailed article about his problems with the process, and why he eventually chose to write for himself.
Here’s the article, “Being an About.com Guide.”
